WHAT ARE COFFEE GROUNDS? 5 SIMPLE TIPS TO USE COFFEE GROUNDS AT HOME

Coffee is an indispensable part of Vietnamese culture. Currently, Vietnam is the second largest coffee producing country in the world, with an output of nearly 2 million tons per year. That means every day a large amount of coffee grounds are thrown away.
In this article, Goce Coffee will share 5 detailed tips on how to use coffee grounds, easy to apply at home, to help you live greener.

What are coffee grounds?
Coffee grounds are the residue left after brewing, in the form of moist powder, dark brown in color with a characteristic aroma. Normally, many people consider this a waste product and throw it away immediately after use. However, studies show that coffee grounds still contain many useful compounds such as caffeine, antioxidants, proteins and minerals. Therefore, instead of being thrown away, coffee grounds can be reused for many purposes in beauty, hygiene, plant care and environmental protection.
Why should we use coffee grounds?
- Nutritional value: Coffee grounds still contain caffeine and antioxidant compounds that can be used in beauty and skin care.
- Environmentally friendly: Reusing coffee grounds helps reduce organic waste, contributing to limiting pollution.
- Cost savings: Instead of buying more specialized products, you can use coffee grounds to replace part of your daily activities.

- Rinse: Use warm water, then apply moisturizer.
- Frequency: 2-3 times/week to avoid thinning the skin.
Note: Avoid using on open wounds. Test on a small area of skin to check for allergies. Combine sunscreen after bleaching to protect the skin.
Deodorize with Coffee
Grounds Humid weather can easily cause odors in refrigerators or shoes. Deodorizing with coffee grounds is a folk remedy that is effective in absorbing moisture and deodorizing strongly, suitable for use in refrigerators, shoes, or cars. How to do:
- Preparation: Dry the coffee grounds in the sun or microwave (1-2 minutes) to avoid mold.
- Apply to refrigerators: Pour the grounds into a small bowl or cloth bag, place in the drawer, replace after 3-5 days.
- Apply to shoes: Sprinkle dry grounds into shoes, leave overnight, then vacuum or pour out.
- Apply to cars: Hang a bag of coffee grounds on the rearview mirror to remove the smell of cigarette smoke or food.
Note: Use dry grounds to avoid mold. Do not place in a closed space for too long to avoid dust.

Coffee Grounds as Fertilizer
The trend of growing organic vegetables in Vietnam is growing, and coffee grounds as fertilizer is a great solution to improve the soil. The grounds contain nitrogen, potassium, magnesium and nutrients necessary for plants.
How to do:
- Preparation: Collect coffee grounds from 5-7 days, dry to reduce moisture
- Compost: Mix the grounds with dry leaves or organic fertilizer (ratio 1:2), compost in a closed container for 2-4 weeks, stir well weekly.
- Application: Sprinkle around the base of the tree (10-20g/small tree) or mix into the soil (5-10% of the total amount of soil).
- Watering: Keep the soil moist for microorganisms to decompose nutrients.
Safety note: Do not overdose to avoid acidic soil (pH <5.5)
Repel Insects with Coffee Grounds
Ants, cockroaches, and snails are familiar 'enemies' in the house, especially during the rainy season. Coffee grounds contain caffeine and diterpene compounds (cafestol, kahweol) - which have a smell and nerve-inhibiting properties for many insects. Therefore, just sprinkle a little dry coffee grounds in the corner of the kitchen or around the base of the tree, and you have a natural, safe, and effective way to repel them.
How to do it:
- Preparation: Dry the coffee grounds completely.
- Apply indoors: Sprinkle grounds around ant nests or where insects gather.
- Apply outdoors: Spread grounds around the base of trees or dilute with water (1:5) to spray.
Safety note: Change grounds after rain. Avoid using near bees or beneficial insects.
Whitening Bath with Coffee Grounds
Coffee grounds not only exfoliate but also help brighten the skin, improve dark spots, and make the skin smoother.
How to do:
- Preparation: 4-5 spoons of coffee grounds, unsweetened fresh milk, a few drops of fresh lemon.
- Application: Apply all over the body, massage for 15-20 minutes before bathing. - Rinse: Use mild soap, apply moisturizer afterwards.
- Frequency: 1-2 times/week to avoid dry skin.
Note: Avoid sensitive skin areas. Use sunscreen after bathing.
