6 Ways to Grind Coffee Beans Without a Grinde

title

Have you just bought a bag of whole coffee beans but forgot you don't have a grinder? Or your grinder suddenly broke down in the morning when you need a cup of coffee to wake up? In this article, Goce Coffee will guide you through 6 methods of grinding coffee without a grinder in detail, along with great tips to achieve the desired fineness.

Why Do You Need to Grind Coffee Before Brewing?

When coffee beans are ground, the surface area in contact with water increases significantly. This helps the water extract the maximum amount of flavor compounds, essential oils, and caffeine from inside the coffee beans. If you brew coffee from whole, unground beans, the extraction process will take a long time and be ineffective.

6 Methods of Grinding Coffee Without a Grinder

Mortar and Pestle

The mortar and pestle is the oldest tool used to grind spices, herbs, and coffee beans. This method combines pounding and rotating, creating a uniform coffee powder with a fineness that can be controlled well.

Steps:

- Add 2-3 tablespoons of coffee beans to the mortar (grind in small amounts for more consistent results)

- Use your dominant hand to firmly hold the pestle, while the other hand holds the mortar firmly

- Hit it down hard to break the coffee beans - Once the beans are broken, rotate and grind again

- Continue adding beans and repeat until you have the required amount

- Grind until you reach the desired fineness

Blender

Most households have a blender, making it the easiest solution when it comes to grinding coffee. The sharp blades of the machine will quickly chop the coffee beans into small pieces.

Steps:

- Select "Grinder" or high speed mode

- Add 1/4 - 1/2 cup of coffee beans to the machine

- Close the lid tightly - Use the "Pulse" function to grind intermittently for 3-5 seconds at a time

- Tilt the machine slightly while grinding so that large beans fall onto the blades

- Check the fineness and continue until the required level is reached

Important tips:

- Do not grind continuously for more than 30 seconds to avoid heat generation

- Only grind small amounts at a time (maximum 1/2 cup)

- Clean the machine immediately after grinding to avoid rancid coffee smell.

Rolling Pin

Rolling pin is a common tool in every kitchen. The cylindrical design helps you break the beans while applying even pressure to grind them finely.

Steps:

- Place the coffee beans in a thick zip-top bag or sealed parchment bag

- Place the bag flat on a hard surface (cutting board or countertop)

- Use the rolling pin like a hammer to break the coffee beans

- Once the beans are broken, roll the rolling pin back and forth with moderate force

- Continue until the desired fineness is achieved.

Tips:

- Place a soft towel or cutting board under the bag to reduce noise

- Work from one end of the bag to the other for evenness

- Check frequently to avoid over-fine grinding

Hammer

This method is ideal for French Press or Cold Brew, which require a coarse grind. You can use a hammer or meat pounder.

Steps:

- Place the coffee beans in a zip-top bag or between two layers of parchment paper

- Place on a sturdy surface (a towel can be placed underneath)

- Hammer evenly from corner to corner

- Check for breakage and continue until desired

Safety notes:

- Be careful not to hit so hard that you break the countertop

- Make sure the bag is sealed so the beans don't shoot out.

Kitchen Knives

Using a wide kitchen knife (cleaver or chef's knife) is a technique used by professional chefs when grinding nuts or spices.

Steps:

- Place the coffee beans on a large, sturdy cutting board

- Place the flat side of the knife on the beans (sharp edge facing up)

- Use the palm of your hand to press down firmly on the knife to crush the beans

- Collect the beans and repeat until the desired fineness is achieved

Safety notes:

- Do not use the sharp edge of the knife to hit the beans - the beans will shoot out

- Always keep the sharp edge facing away from your body

- Work slowly and carefully

Food Processor

A food processor works similarly to a blender but has a larger capacity and more powerful blades, making it suitable for grinding a lot of coffee at once.

Steps:

- Place 1-2 tablespoons of coffee beans in the grinding bowl

- Cover tightly

-  Use "Pulse" mode - grind intermittently

- Tilt the machine slightly while grinding so that large beans fall onto the blades

- Remove and add a new batch if needed

Important Notes

Ground coffee will lose its flavor very quickly due to exposure to air. Therefore, only grind enough for use in 1-2 days.

Old coffee grounds left behind will have a rancid smell, affecting the next batch. Always clean the tools immediately after use.

After grinding, put the coffee powder in a sealed container, store in a dry place, away from light and high temperatures. Coffee beans should be used within 2-4 weeks after roasting to ensure the best flavor.
